Rajshahi is a city located in west-central Bangladesh, close to the border with India. It has tropical weather, with high temperatures, considerable humidity, and moderate rainfall. It is the fourth-largest city in Bangladesh with a population of over 700,000 people. The city might be well-known for its mangoes, but it is gaining even more recognition for its effective measures on urban sustainability.
Four years ago, Rajshahi hit the headlines for achieving the largest reduction in the levels of harmful PM10 particulates between 2014 and 2016, as per UN data. It was the result of a number of initiatives taken by the city authorities over several years. The city authorities continue to implement other strategic interventions.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
